If they can clone animals why would anyone pay stud fees for a horse like barbaro?

As has been said, cloning is illegal in the Thoroughbred world, along wth Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer.

Just because a horse may be a clone of a champion, it is no guarantee that he/she will be as good a racehorse.

There are too many other factors involved: the people handling them in their first months of life, the people that train them, the people that ride them.  Each one has an effect on the horse, no matter how small.

There are plenty of full siblings to champion racehorses out there that have proved to be no good.   For example Colorado Dancer, dam of the great Dubai Millennium, has been bred back to Seeking the Gold 5 times since she had Dubai Milliennium and one of them made it to the racetrack and he only managed one run!

Part of the fun in breeding racehorses is EVERYONE has the chance to breed the next Derby winner - it's all about the roll of the dice!

Because horses that are not conceived naturally are not eligible to race in Thoroughbred Racing in the US.  That means cloning and AI.
