If they discover huge amounts of oil in the Falklands, do you think the Argies will try it again?

There are some massive reserves down their apparently, to which the UK has the major claim (after rather sneakily extended our sovereign territory down their behind the argentines back). What do you think will happen. Personally, i think nothing, the argentines know what to expect...

  1. If they did, I can't see the UK having the long range bomber aircraft like the Vulcan that caused so much damage to Stanley.

The UK RAF does not have the capability of sustaining a long range bombing campaign and Army has more troops overseas than they could ever be deployed to fight a war elsewhere.

We would have to gain assistance from other countries and I doubt that would happen.

  2. they wont dare mess with the might of the british armed forces. we pounded them last time and we can do the same again.

the harrier jump jet played a big part in the war back then and we still got them plus better fighter jets so they wont stand much of a chance.

the uk forces are very much 'up there' when it comes to modern warfare.

  3. Well, seeing as how you barely beat them last time, and that since then you have let your military slip a lot.  Well, just say that unless you got help, the Argies would own the land and the oil.

  4. I think if Argentina did invade again I don't think we would fight alone,

i read the other day something about the new Argentine president not ruling out the use of troop to protect their interests.

  5. what try to take back the islands a few kilometres off their coast from a nation thousands and thousands of miles away?

    eh no it wasnt sneaky.

hope they surround the ISLAS MALVINAS

  6. Unlikely.

  7. The oil reserves of the Falklands have been known about for a very long time.

Anyone who thinks the Brits [with American help] went down to the Falklands in 1982 just for a few flocks of sheep, needs their head examining.

  8. I'm not sure weather or not they would envade the islands again. although a few months back it looked as if they really wanted to reclaim the falklands back through diplomacy, so they still think that the islands is theirs by right, so they might try to envade all though i cant see them ever winning.

  9. Yes!But let the Falkland Islanders decide!

  10. If they did it would be over even quicker than last time. The reason the brits suffered some heavy losses was because they were often fighting uphill and outnumbered. The Argies dug in on most of the falklands mountains which we were forced to attack. Someone mentioned that we dont have long range bombers anymore, but simply we dont need them. We wouldnt have to launch aircraft to tarket argentine positions on hills or airfields because we could do the job with a few cruise missiles. Argentina is a long thin country, we could target the majority of its airfields from subs armed with cruise missiles. Their Navy would still be running scared from our subs and our tanks are the best in the world. The UKalso has a larger force based their as well so, the islands are more defendable. It would be no contest, plus if their is oil there the US would probably help out.

  11. If it wasn't for the Faulklands war the islands would be in Argentinian hands by now, as we would have handed them over diplomatically like we have done with almost every other territory we've ever had: hong kong, malta, cyprus, south africa, india, palestine. I hope we never give the islands back and keep a bit of British history alive!

  12. The Americans would invade before the Argentinians.

  13. They might.  I doubt it though.

More importantly, if they tried again, they would get an even bigger beating than last time.

The fate of the Falkland Islands should be determined by those on the Falklands.  If they want to be British, fine.  If they want to be Argentinian, then that view should be respected as well.

And they want to be British.

  14. lol

  15. the only way they could get the islands back diplomatically is by a vote from the islanders and since they consider themselves british it aint going to happen, if they found oil there do you seriously think the UK would let them have it or the americans for that matter who do you think the usa trust's more argentina or the UK. during the last war the americans helped us not directly but they did help.

what happened to argentina after the war did they become a prosperous nation? also it is heavily defended now.

    it aint going to happen.

  16. Oh, if proven reserves are found there's two immediate issues.

One, it'll probably be in the deeply nasty seas surrounding the Falklands, which current technology struggles to get to. So there'll be a scramble to develop and deploy new oil extraction equipment.

Two, if the oil is relatively easily extracted, I predict the British garrison in Port Stanley will achieve 'don't f'ing even think about it' proportions. And frankly, Stanley is about the most boring place in the world... unless you like fishing and birdwatching... things which most soldiers don't get exactly involved in. So if they're sufficiently bored and a wee Argentinian assault unit rolls in, there will be violence. Of the short and unhealthy for Argentinian soldiers variety.

  17. I dare say that there would be a bit of an increase in the number of forces there but I doubt the argies would actually try to take them back again.
