does that mean airoplanes can do too? Do you think they are capable? I'm asking this seriously! no joke. What do you think?

  1. as long as there is oil in the ground, the gov't will stop the use of alt fuels. why else do you think we don't have vehicles that run on hydrogen? unlimited supply and only emissions are water. 0 pollution.

  2. DIESEL cars can run on veg oil if properly converted. Petrol cars cannot!

Modern Planes use neither petrol or diesel, so I would doubt it very much!

  3. IT is a BIG If, but if it could be made light enough then yes it should be able to fly a plane on it.

  4. I wouldn't like to be in the plane whist they are testing it. But unfortunately i don't think it would be powerful enough. sorry

  5. In WW II the Germans flew fighter planes using diesel engines. they even flew a plane using powdered coal as fuel.  Planes using steam engines have also flown, and a steam engine can easily use vegetable oil, using the exhaust heat to warm the veg oil.  However jet engines require a special type of fuel, which is difficult to make from organic oils.

Yes, they could build aircraft using steam engines and vegetable oil, propeller type planes, that would be a match for most IC type planes.

hookerln - and where does the hydrogen come from? It has to be made by electricity and the electricity is made by nuclear, hydro or coal and a lot more of these plants will be needed. TANSTAAFL = There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

  6. I am not sure about areoplanes.  I used to run my car on it & i ran into problems about certain parts not bein lubricated that garages sem to think caused my fuel pump to fail can't prove it but I have stopped using 'BIO FUEL' /  Cooking oil and I am an avid recycler so I feel a bit disappointed.  I hink that more research needs to be done and that all the chemicals are put in these substances to ensure proper care of all componets of the mechanics as if using in winter months freeze problems can arise.  I say this from experience.  I hope it helps as if you were up in a plane you would need to be safe as can be so at he moment I would leave it to the experts to do the appropriate tests on it.

  7. Veg oil will run diesel engines

Diesels have low power to weight (they are heavy) so are not ideal for flight.

Jet engines run on parafin/kerosene. Veg oil, or any other source of organic hydrocarbon, can be converted/refined to kerosene, but would be energy intensive and inefficient = costly.

electric planes are better and quieter, if only early development stage at the moment

eg 45 min flight per charge

and a round world solar plane next year

  8. A catagoric yes and they are already flying, with the economy of a car but much faster.

  9. Diesel engines were originally invented as veg oil engines, and the kerosene-like mineral fuel we use now was just a cheap substitute. However, although industrial gas tubines will run on just about any flammable liquid, the high performance ones in aircraft really need very light kerosene. To synthesise that from veg oil would be technically possible but prohibitively expensive.

  10. Yes there is at least one endeavor to turn Recycled Veg oil into jet fuel. Just caught it on TV awhile back sorry dont have a better source.

  11. It's possible, yes.  Oil, whether vegetable or petroleum, has the basic hydrocarbon chain that is jet fuel.  However, jet fuel is highly refined; it must remain liquid at very cold temperatures as well.  Jet fuel is quite a different story from regular car fuel.  Unaltered veg oil cannot be used as jet fuel.  I'm not entirely sure how much modification would be required to make veg oil behave as proper jet fuel or how expensive it is however.

  12. Yes, Virgin Atlantic are putting serious funds into it, there is another company working on it too. This will allow us to keep on pumping C02 back into the environment, even when oil gets prohibitively expensive. Hoorah!

  13. An aeroplane jet engine is the only engine that can not run on alternative fuels at the moment. Everything else can be modified.

  14. have you seen the bus company who will run their buses on `green diesel(recycled cooking oil from chippies and resturants)that say if you bring your old oil from home they will reduce your fare by 20p..with all that oil on board if the bus gets into a skid it will take 2 days to come to an halt.

  15. I highly doubt it

  16. Id say it would be hard to do, Airplanes use a fuel air mixture, veggy oil is way too dense for that type of fast burning

  17. probably but youve got to think how long does veg oil last

i know that say 1 litre of diesel will last longer than 1 litre of petrol

would veg oil last longer than diesel??

or would it burn up in half an hour

  18. Cars cant run on cooking oil. Diesel engines can. Otto cycle engines need gasoline (petrol) or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Aeroplanes also have different engine types. The jet runs on Avtur (a kind of kerosene-low grade petrol, sort of). Prop planes use Avgas (high grade petrol). Don't think any makes a deisel engined plane anymore.

  19. The US goverrnment has commissioned a study on flying military jets with rendered animal fats, so yes, pigs can fly.    Probably work with vege oil too.
