If they want to help the environment, why doesn't the government tax new cars very highly instead of gas.....

It is less harmful fot the environment it you drive your 4 litre 4x4 into the ground than if you sell it and buy a brand new prius

Exactly!  I saw a little new Euro-Pox-Box from a leasing company with the sticker on it "A NEW CAR EVERY TWO YEARS!" and had to think "WHY?" to myself?  It is very polluting, to make a new car.  My Alfa is from '89, my Mercedes too.  They run very clean exhausts, as they are well serviced, and have years of life left in them.
