  1. No, I recently plugged my tv, vcr, stereo, and game console into a power strip with a switch. When I turn off the tv I flip the switch and stop using standby energy. I also unplug all chargers when not charging, cell phone, laptop, and toothbrush. I shut the desktop computer off all the way to the battery backup. My utility bill has dropped by about $50 from the same month last year.

  2. no because there is no electricity being conducted through the power surger, which is connected directly to the socket. which means no electricity is being transmitted to the devices plugged in to the power surger. (or extension cord w/ switch)

  3. nope

  4. No.

  5. Yes. There are some appliances that you always want to unplug if you aren't using them, because of the drain. An electrician or the website of the appliance manufacturer can give you the exact usage rates.

There may be some things that are "idle" and use little, but mostly it uses some.

  6. No. The manual switch will totally cut the power line. In case of a desktop computer, the power switch at the back should be turned off. But only if the front button switch is off, the PC will still consume power.

  7. i don't think so but unplug it just 2 b safe.

  8. as long as the switch is off no

  9. Yes, open up your computer or look in the back of a TV that is off and you will see lights or leds lit up.....small amounts of electricity are still being used unless the item is unplugged

If your using a power strip with a switch you can shut that off and cut out the wasted energy use.

  10. Well as can be seen by some of the answers, the question is not very clear. I'll just cover all bases.

You could mean a power strip, and these common pieces of protection equipment for your electronics can be built multiple ways. All the ways that they can be constructed, when the switch is off on the strip, the electronics does not use power. This does not mean that the power strip is not using power though. If the protective parts of the power strip are connected before the switch, they can sit there consuming power. If they are after the switch, they wont. Also if they have lights to "help you find the switch" then they consume power.  Power strips also have 3 wires on them. The "hot", the "common", and the ground. Sometimes when a house is having repairs on the wiring, or the wiring is being installed, the "hot" and the "common" can be reversed. In this case your electronics can still sit there and consume power even when the switch is off. Actually "can" is not a proper word, they will consume power.

You could have meant there is a switch on a extension cord (just a cord), in that case if the switch on the extension cord is off, the power is totally off. No power can be consumed. Note that the 3-wire thing for power strips applies here too.

Finally, what led to you asking this question to begin with: electronics (almost all newer items) use electricity when off. Newer being made in the nineties and after.
