If those plastic grocery bags are so bad for the environment, why don't they just stop making them?

Everyone would have to use reusable bags, and the government should have have free bags available to people who can't afford to buy them.

Any plastic is bad weather it is grocery bag or computer.  Until an alternative which is not bad and cheap invented earth has to bear it . No choice except thinking!!!

Here is a perfect argument on this...the reason that the supermarkets are using plastic bags is because apparently it costs the supermarket ( or any other store) less than 1 cent each for the plastic bags and about 5 cents each for the paper bags. There are environmentalists who say neither is a good choice because the recycling processes are not as friendly to the environment as they should be.

Many places in the world ( mainly in Europe) most use reusable cloth bags that they take with them to the market. Great idea, good for the environment, but least cost efficient...many stores charge upward of $3.95 each for them. The idea of the Government providing these for free to those who cannot afford them isn't cost efficient either.

If driving a car is so bad for the environment, why don't they just stop making cars?

People like plastic bags....it's what you expect from the grocery store. Just because they're bad for the environment, doesn't mean the government has any control over whether they're made or not.

that's a really good idea, but there are many people who actually prefer them, there are very less people who would like to give up using plastic bags for the sake of the environment, if a large number of people stop using it, then automatically, they will stop making them.plus, it is a very cheap alternative, so i guess they are hooked on to make more and more plastic bags.

You can recycle plastic bag in most food store. Look for recycle basket for plastic bag.

Whole Foods stopped offering them in our area.   I think more stores would but are afraid to lose business.

I guess there was an article in the paper saying they might start charging for them so more people finally bought the reusable bags now.
