If todays immigrants are coming for the money rather than the freedom, why not make them do community service?

I've lived next door to them, dated them, and lets face it...if they were the kind of people who cared about their communities, they would have stayed in their countries of origin. So why not make them do community service to get or keep their legal status and prove themselves worthy as potential citizens?

  1. The comprehensive immigration reform say that they would have to pay a fine, but you know what that's a good idea after they learn to speak English, pay back

taxes, pay a fine all those duties, they should do communitary services, the problem with this is that I'm totally sure they will be able to pay evgen twice the taxes than we pay for 2 or 3 years just to get legal but they don't have a pathway to legalization .

That's why we need a comprehensive immigration reform

  2. What your saying sounds like bringing in slavery for all those who are not lucky enough to be born here. If this is what we are spreading around the world then please lets stop now.

  3. All wrong, it's not going to work.

  4. No.  No compromises with people breaking the laws.  If they can't do things legally, they need to be punished, not rewarded.  Deportation and perhaps time served in jail.

And PLEASE -- don't call them immigrants.  That's an insult to our legal immigrants.  Call them what they are -- illegal aliens.

    ****edit***

If you are referring to our LEGAL immigrants, I would again have to disagree with you.  I think that the majority of our legal immigrants are here for the same reasons that they have always come.  They make amazing citizens.  I don't think they need to prove themselves any more than by following our legal immigration program.

  5. First of all, you can't just assume they don't care about their communities because they don't do community service. Many immigrants who come for the economic promise of America come because they could not support their families in their countries of origin.

And I think a lot of immigrants do prove themselves worthy as potential citizens simply because they're more hardworking and more family-oriented than many native-born citizens.

Personally, I don't think they should be made to do community service. No one should ever be made to do it, unless it is for a punishment. I feel that community service should be done voluntarily, out of the kindness of one's heart... Besides, how many Americans do you see doing community service every day? We can't hold immigrants to a higher standard than we hold our own native-born citizens. When we become a nation of community service, then maybe...

But somehow, I doubt that will ever happen.

  6. Good idea. Make sure their dependents following them do the same. This country is built on community spirit and volunteer works. It would be nice first lesson any immigrant learns - "Give a little, share a little" to experience real joy of life.
