If two ppl r divorced and they have a kid.....?

and the kid lives with the mom but the dad pays almost all the expenses for the kid then would the dad get to use the kid as a tax write off or the mother would even though the dad pays most of expenses for the kid?

  1. To be fair take turns, one year he gets to have the child on his taxes, the next you do.


  2. You all have to make that decision, talk with the other parent

  3. that's up to the people involved maybe the can each do six months  

  4. Unless it says in their custody agreement that he can, they have to work it out themselves.  

  5. He would be entitled to the write off and  he should keep proof of the expenses, just in case his ex files the child as her dependent.  


  6. Depends where you live. You can't in Canada. Spousal support is taxable by the receiver and a write off for the payer, but not child support. You should look it up on you state/province or country's government tax site.

  7. Legally the mom is the one who claims the kid because the child lives in her home a child has to live in your home over half the year to claim them for that year. As does any dependent.
