  1. There's a very funny book written to explain the French to the Americans. One of the first thing the author explains is that the French do not smile. That simple explanation made one of my American friends stop and think and realise that all those 'extremely rude' people she always complained about had been in fact rather helpful but... without a smile, which her upbringing immediately made her translate as rude.

There are rude people, of course, just as in any other country. But I think cultural misunderstanding has a lot to do with that reputation.

  2. I'm not french from France (from Canada) but I have some experiences from my (all-too-brief) travels there.  When in France, be like the French (that's my suggestion).  Walk fast to get to your destination, be fast when you talk (food ordering, shopping), then, when it's time to relax (meals, especially) relax.  Never be too loud, always smile and try to speak French if you can.  If this answer doesn't satisfy you, there might be historical reasons why France is thought of as rude (constantly under attack by England, Germany, etc...), the role their monarchy played, the role of their Revolution. Hope this helps!

  3. I'm french.

I completely agree with people above me, not sure i should me proud to say that... lol !

It's true we don't spend our time smiling in the streets, do you ??

Seriously, i think french are just more... straightforward. You should see Yahoo France, it's very different from here !

I don't think it's an accident if the adjective "frank" (sincere) is the root of the word France.

  4. I am not French but I had a good experience of French people. Generally, they have strong personality and character. We had someone working with us who was most of the time shouting, angry and behaved unbecomingly. But if you know them deeply, they are good hearted.
