If its somebody's word against yours then someone saw you do it so there is a witness to the crime.  Its a federal offense and yes you can get charged with a big fine and might even go to jail for a few days.

yup.  messing with a mailbox is pretty serious.  it's a federal offense, because it's tampering with mail.

Yes, you can be charged.  And damaging mail boxes is a federal offense, as you are tampering with mail delivery.

Yes, you can be charged. If you are underage, your sentence will probably only be until you turn 18. However, if you are over legal age you may be sent to jail for up to 5 years. Plus be charged other charges other then the federal charges for breaking off the flaps, such as malicious mischief, disorderly conduct. I would suggest that you quickly replace the mailbox, appologize, and ask to be forgiven. You may get away with a lot of community service. And the offended party may not press any charges. What made you tear up someone's mailbox in the first place?
