  1. The theory that bi-polar depression vascilates between two extremes.

One extreme being depression, feeling down, no energy, a pessimestic view of life, helpless and hopeless.

The opposite of the depressive stage of bi-polar illness is the manic phase or the "up" phase. This phase can be as slight as just feeling in general good and happy to being so hyper that you cannot stop moving, cannot stop to eat, you are unable to sleep for weeks and can include psychosis and even death.

Most folks feeling depression welcome relief from the pain of feeling sad all the time.

However, the person experiencing the manic phase often does not want to change how they feel. They feel great. Exuberant, on top of the world, invinceable. If they have the kind of illness where they have experienced the depression they are relieved to feel so energetic and positive. A person in the manic phase is not aware that they may lack good judgement, and are so optimistic that no matter how much risk is in an action they lack the insight to understand  the consequences of their actions.

A person in the manic phase feels so good and cannot see anything negative about actions like sexual promiscuity, spending every penny in their bank account, taking in strangers, buying 3 sports cars ect.

They need the medication to balance their brain chemistry but a balanced brain chemistry doesn't feelas great as the high of mania.

So many folks with this diagnosis who are non-compliant with their treatment plan, end  up in relationship liasons that are dangerous, bankrupt and can have heart attacks and other breakdowns in their health due to the strain that mania has on their physical bodies.

Also when they come back down and enter the depressive stage of bi-polar illness they have to deal not only with the depression but also the mess they have made of their lives during the manic phase.
