  1. I just had this problem. I live in a retirement community, with a 15mph speed limit, and one day while riding I passed 3 cars. The next day I received a phone call saying there had been 3 complaints about me speeding. I told them I didn't think I was speeding, but thought the 3 drivers died and were coasting to a stop. When the laughing stopped, I was told to go slower, but no ticket. Bikes are subject to the same laws as cars, and you can get a ticket.

  2. Certainly - just as you can be breathalised on a bike.

  3. Yes you can, and will!

    I have been out on my road bike loads of times and been stopped by the police. Some have given me warnings for going over 40 in a 30, and i also got a £30 fine for speeding in a 30! They got me with a handgun camera. Personally they are robbing. But you can definately get done, police will do anything to get some more money. I have about as much time for them as they have for catching real criminals!

  4. You can even be convicted for "Dangerous Cycling" - honestly.

  5. As there  is no speedometer on a bicycle there is also no crime of speeding on a bicycle. If a policeman or CPO thinks that you are riding dangerously fast you can get a fixed penalty ticket of £30 or be prosecuted in court and receive other penalties as appropriate. I believe the offence is called riding furiously.

    If you break any other traffic laws you CAN be prosecuted under the road traffic act (in the UK) but you won't get points on your licence for an offence committed when riding a bicycle.

    If you're on a motorbike, all regulations regarding speeding DO apply.

    This answer only applies to the UK.

  6. On public roadways:

    Cited = Yes

    Arrested = ??

  7. Yes you can, A cyclist has to follow the same rules and a driver.

  8. Yes, the speed limit is there for all modes of transport, cars, vans, bikes, horses and skateboards.

  9. you'll probably get a fixed penalty notice but you just can't get points! I think cyclist should get licences just like us! (I am an irate driver)

  10. In addition to the above answers, even in national speed limit areas, if you do over 30 mph, you are speeding, since this is the max mph allowed for bikes.

    Someone commented that cyclists should have licences, which can be endorsed the same as a car driver.

    Most cyclists are still children which, for most of the time will mean that they are under the legal age of criminal responsibility (Although in this instance you might argue for fining the parents).

    However (This includes the irate motorist), if you have watched Road Wars recently, or Cops with Cameras, how many motorists have been stoped without licence, insurance, MOT, or even safe vehicles?  Also, when out driving, when was the last time you were undercut by a couple of BMW borjmobiles driven by a rep or walking mid life crisis, who were racing each other?

    Rant over

  11. PS You are required to abide by all road laws, but...

    You can get fined, but only if caught by a manned camera.  With no number/licence plate on a bike, traditional speed cameras, although could catch you speeding, cannot recognise you.  Being arrested is highly unlikely unless yuour speed has caused an avoidable accident and they feel you were cycling dangerously.

  12. As a cyclist, you are exempt from all normal road laws.  You can exceed the speed limit, drive though red lights, not wear reflective clothing or have lights on in the dark, cycle on the pavements and even knock someone down and kill them without any risk of a criminal offence.  Do as you please.

  13. Cyclists are subject to the same rules as motorist on the highway, however the penalties are different.  You can be fined (£30), you do not get a license endorsement and you are no more likely than a motorist to be arrested for speeding.
