Everything falls under the naming "machinery" you will be able to design. Mechanical engineering students study some subjects like : theory of machines, design of machinery(dynamics and vibration), design of mechanical components ...etc.

You will certainly be responsible for the "invention" of new products, new devices and mechanisms. Don't bother with those who don't know what the word invention mean.

Patents are being recorded on daily basis, you will certainly be an inventor if you really want to.. go ahead !

A degree isn't a magic pill that makes you an inventor, it just gives you the tools to invent.

A persons ability to invent cannot be measured by how much data was shoved into they brain, but how they use it.

Holy cow - the possibilities are enormous!

I am a mechanical engineer and I do fuel cells and micro-electronics cooling. The mechanical engineer might be considered the jack-knife of the engineering trades - s/he can do just about anything. Solar - yes. engines - yes. robots - yes. aircraft - yes. turbines -yes. power generation, bikes, novel bio-mimetic materials, super alloy materials, bio-mechanical systems, etc. etc.
