  1. According to the equations for sound intensity, the fact that the door is open or closed doesn't affect the intensity of sound that you'll hear. What affects sound intensity are things like the average power of the radio, the distance separating you from your radio, the pressure amplitude of the sound waves, the speed of sound, the displacement amplitude, the angular frequency, the bulk modulus, the density of air, and the wave number. However, I do feel that the sound is louder when the door is closed when my radio is on. I guess it's because when the room is closed, some sound waves hit the walls, others reach you and some of them are reflected from the walls and reach your ears again so they can't really go further away, and thus you feel that you hear the sound lounder. I'm sorry if I'm giving you two contradictory answers, I guess I'm not really sure myself.

  2. Acoustical coupling is the name of the phenomenon you are describing and it has some profound effects on sound volume and quality. First of all...the sound decibel level will be greater in a closed room under normal conditions. However, the acoustical properties of a closed room also influence the development both in time and space of the sound pressure that is caused by the occurrence of a sound in the room. Some studies do show a slight variance in effects of Linear versus Sigmoid Coded audio, but these results have not proven consistently repeatable.

  3. That shouldn't affect the reception (unless you have a metal door and it is directly between you and the transmitter), but a confined space contains the sound, so it should seem louder when it's closed.
