Reminds me of a teenager who wants change/to be different, so he/she gets a tattoo/bellybutton piercing. Meanwhile millions of other teenagers are doing the same exact thing just to be different.

why do people assosciate tatoo's and piercings with rebellion?

    Have yous really lived in a cave your whole lives?

Dont mean to be harsh but the reality is..well atleast the circle of people I knew growing up they thought it looked "cool". Or liked the look of them. Some of there parents had tatoo's some piercings.. some did not.

     Did it ever occur that maybe there just gravitating towards something that appeals to there curiosity?

Have you thought of whom they are trying to be different from? Belly button piercings and tattoos are generally considered to be non-conservative, is it possible that these teenagers that you speak of are rebelling against conservatives? Is it also possible that they attempt to differ by using commonly used methods since it has had the reaction in which they seek.

Hopefully everybody wants change.  You have to remember that teenagers are at a fragile point in their lives where they act angsty and rebellious and try to stay away from the "norm" when all they really want to do is feel accepted.
