  1. My dream was to work on board a cruise !! I did it in 1992 for Costa Cruises, sailed the Caribbean, Alaska, Mediterranean and Northern Europe. I was in charge for the Reception. Worked on board for two years, met my future husband, was offered a job as Personnel Manager hiring crew member from all over the world, based in Miami, Florida...and then realized that I had to continue my life. I left it all, came to live to Italy, married and have a wonderful family with 2 small girls. If I could do it over, I would do it ...this time for a longer period and try to visit other parts of the world. I do not know if I would allow my daughter to work on board ( not after what I saw that goes on between crew and officers ... :-) haha...but it's been the most wonderful experience I have ever had and will always remember those years . I lived some wonderful moments and each day was full of something new and made me enjoy my job so much that I'm sorry that I can't do it anymore !!

Languages are important, so if you can study not only English, but Spanish, Italian, German and French...DO IT !!Languages will  open any door !

  2. If i was single yes, it would be lots of fun to travel for free!

  3. no, becuase of the titanic and yes because of the scenery.

  4. I was a chaplain on a warship. I thew up every day for a year.

  5. In a heartbeat, I am a currently an Estate Agent and would love to work on a boat, any suggestions?

  6. No-

I have had a chance to talk to the people that work on these ships. They work 16 hour days- are away from family for 6 months ata time and don't make a good wage.

It's not as glamorous as it looks.

I am sure all the big shots (cruise director and such) make a good buck- but not your basic worker.

  7. I would I have always wanted to go on a cruise ship!!

  8. Heck yes!  Gosh!  As long as I knew I could have at least some time in every port to explore.  And of course, it would depend on the cruiseship & area.  Nice ship - in the tropics or Mediterranean?  I'm there.

If I was with someone, I would want them to come too.  If not, I would want to make sure there were hot cabin boys!  I think it would be fun.  You would become close with the other peeps on the ship & have access to all the stuff the guests do.

  9. yes..I would go for it since I'm gonna see the world...then I'm gonna see girls all year-round !

  10. Probably..I'd at least try it out. Why? Well the chance to travel of course. You take turns at the different ports - sometimes you have to work, but you also get to visit the ports at times..

  11. I think many people are thinking about the old Love Boat show when it comes to cruises.  A lot of misconceptions there.  People who work on a cruise ship typically work long hours and don't usually have a lot of free time except maybe a day in a port every few weeks.  Your contract is usually for months at a time.  Most of the mass market cruiselines hire mostly non-Americans for a reason: inexpensive labor.

Only the NCL-America ships, which are American-flagged, have basically all-American crews.

Now there are other classes of employees such as contracted ones -- entertainers, for an example.  My husband has checked into becoming a musician in the future after he retires from his current job.  It sounds like a hard job to get just as any other entertainment-based job.

  12. yes, to travel and see stuff.

  13. oh i would for sure! even if you are working, you still get to see the world and meet people from all over the world! i would love that.

  14. YES , we only have one life...and if we had the chance to travel and get paid at the same time .... of course.

  15. I think it would be fun if you had a management position.  The only way you get your own room is if you have a management position.  Other than that, I would hate it.  You have to share a 9'x15' room with four other people you don't know, you don't have access to guest facilities, and you work long hours.

  16. If I didn't have kids and responsibilities here I would! It would be an awesome opportunity to travel and meet different people.

  17. If I were single yes, free travel.  wow think of all the people you would meet.

  18. Yes I would if I was younger and single.  It sounds great but it is very hard work and long hours.  On some ships your contract is for 10 months...that's no holiday for 10 months.

It's a great way to see the world although you don't get time off every time the ship is in port..might get few hours here and there.  You would make some great friends and see and learn lots of new things.

Downside other than little time off is sharing cabin space, working alot, dealing with some not so pleasant passengers and missing family and friends from home after awhile.

Most cruise lines hire from other countries for most jobs (they miss their families and the birth of children while working),  It is easier to get on as entertainment if you're good enough and have a great agent.  Office staff has seemed for the most part to be British but with people from all countries that are very qualified.

If you're thinking of applying and none of this has put you off give it a shot!  What have you got to loose - you'll gain great experience in all areas of life.

  19. Yes,You get to travel and see the world for free and even earn a paycheck.

  20. h**l yes, Cruise ships are like Hook Up Central.

  21. I'd do it only if I could have my own cabin and be able to move around the ship...not be relegated to one little cubbyhole, etc.  On my last cruise, the cruise directors were also the talent, and sang in the shows, etc.  If I had a great voice (and were a lot younger!), that would be the job for me.

  22. YOU BET YA, I WOULD LIKE TO MEET NEW. AND DIFFERENT PEOPLE, AND GO TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

  23. 4 sure, but I would want all my shots, like for hepatitis A,B & c,d....& maybe 1 for irritable bowl syndrom form  drinking tha water, & don't forget a flu shot.

  24. mayb

  25. Yes..Sounds like something completely different.

    Why not!
