If vegetarians don't eat meat, how do they get B12?

It seems like humans NEED the b12 vitamin to survive, but if we omit meat from our diet, than we won't be getting any B12.

so is going vegetarian really the best kind of diet? i recently became a vegetarian because i didnt want to eat once a living animal.

and im a person who refuse to eat any kind of pills/drugs/including vitamins. i am only interested in eating natual/organic foods.

so the question is:

is there any way to get b12 from a natual food source other than meat? or is there no way?

where does b12 come from anyway? (in vitamins)

  1. idk what b12 is, but im a vegetarin, alive and healthy! so idk b12 is in beans or veggie meat! idk! but either way! im guuuud! (:

  2. plenty of places.

    eggs, dairy...

B.12 in viamins is a concentrated form thats found in plants.

All plants have B.12, just not in sufficient quantities to be useful to humans.

Perhaps you should read up on B.12 a bit more ?

    http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html

I could explain all about how we have 2-5mg of B.12 stored and how it lasts for 35 years with no top-up, or that we loose about 1-10 ug each day  via bile ( but re-absorbing through enterohepatic circulation in the intestine but the article does it better ( and I've typed it too often in this forum )

It is thought that the absense of meat, or low liver levels of b.12, increase the efficiency of the enterohepatic re-absorbsion so veggies loose less than meat-eaters anyway.

Vegans might struggle a bit more but you said you were veggie, so you have no b.12 worries.

  3. vegans are the ones whom have difficulty supplementing b12 in their diets because they can't touch milk and eggs whereas vegetarians can drink milk and eggs and even through the normal serving of milk and eggs they get adequate amount sof b12...

vegans usually take pills or eat b12 added foods like nutritional beverages.

  4. dairy or supplements!

  5. I'm vegan and don't take pills (I did, but then a dietician told me not to, but I do have to drink more soy milk now)

You can drink fortified soy milks if you don't consume dairy, or if you do, then dairy milk contains B12.

  6. B12 is made by bacteria, not by animals.

If most people eat meat, dairy, eggs AND cereal that is fortified with B12, why do most people still have B12 levels that are below what is recommended?

  7. You take it in a supplement. You can get it at the grocery or a health food store. Also, it may be in beans and nuts. Get your protein.
