  1. You definitely need to visit Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Salamance the list is endless.

I'd recommend Madrid or Salamanca or anywhere in Castilla y León) for learning Spanish.  In Barcelona the language is Catalan (it's not a dialect but a different language, there are 4 languages in Spain).

  2. spain has many different forms of spanish that vary from region to region. in the Basque their language isn't anything like spanish at all.  they don't view themselves as a unified country like we view them.  you should definitely visit barcelona.  it is quentisential europe for me.  its a beautiful city. if you are american you might want to prentend you are canadian -- there is a lot of anti-american sentiment.  oh -- don't run around in shorts, flip flops, tshirts -- they dress up and they will know you are american.  everyone is usually very friendly in spain.  visit bilbao's guggenheim if you like art and the prado in madrid.  the best way to meet people is by eating with them -- they run around from place to place eating kind of late.  eating is very social.
