What's the point? Anything extra is just excreted, right?

  1. That IS the point, though.  You don't absorb all of the B vitamins you eat or take in supplements.  Since they are water-soluble and won't harm you in larger doses, they add extra to ensure that you absorb enough.

And some B vitamins can, in fact, be stored.  B12 is.

  2. Jen is absolutely right! :)

It seems like they do it to safeguard your health. But yes, B vitamins are water soluble (carried by water) so when you urinate you lose some. :(

It's bad news for alcoholics because alcoholics often end up deficient in B vits. Strong supplementation would be good for such people.

Remember to replenish your B vitamins every day, by eating beans, bread, and nuts etc.

  3. RIght.  But there have been some theories (like the Linus Pauling's famous love of mega-dose Vit C) that mega-doses of water-soluble vitamins have some extra effect.

None of those theories have been proven.

People just end up with expensive urine!
