Question:

If we drilled for oil in Alaska could we end the war in Iraq?

I know from a video I watch in class, that we have plenty of oil in Alaska that we haven't even touched. The video said that the reason that we don't drill for oil there is because to refine and purify the oil there, it would cost alot of money. I'm not sure how accurate this video is, but if this is true, why don't we spend the money to drill and purify the oil and stop wasting time, money and lives in the war in Iraq?

I would like and answer in more than a yes or no in agreement.

  1. may be?hehehe we can't foresight if would,but I wish ...

    good quest.

  2. There is not much oil there at all..it will only last us about 6 months..at the MOST a year..then what?  It will not change anything or lower gas prices either. We will still be dependent on other countries for oil, AND it will destroy lots of habitat and harm and kill lots of wildlife.

  3. Oh, so you think the ONLY reason we are in Iraq is oil? Ok, yeah, let's drill in Alaska, like we've been drilling for years, and then we'll leave Iraq.

    Think about your question.

  4. No.

There is oil in Iraq and it could be argued that there would be no war if there were no oil there.

Saddam Hussein purposely gave the false impression that Iraq was developing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. He miscalculated the fear that western nations have of these non conventional weapons.

Further, the entire region from Indonesia to Nigeria has been destabilized by  Islamic Fundamentalism. The threat of a greater regional or even a global conflict has loomed since the Shah of Iran was deposed. The US now conveniently occupies a very strategic piece of ground in the region. Its not a waste of time, money, or lives if you consider the alternatives.

  5. No, the war in Iraq is a cluster f%$#@ which is not going to end overnight. Drilling in Alaska is a bad idea because it will effect much life, including the animals in the surrounding area. WE ALL MUST TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION and diminish the demand. In Saudi Arabia gas is .48 per gallon and in America it is close to four dollars a gallon.

  6. Widget Maker gave a great answer.  There are those who say that the Iraq war was about oil.  I won't disagree with this but the war was about oil in a different sense.  Many of those countries that were fortunate to be situated above huge oil fields have completely squandered their resources and are using the money for sinister endeavors.   If not for their oil, they would not have the means to accomplish anything and we wouldn't have to worry about them.  Even with trillions in assets, their average citizen squats in the dirt and blames the USA and Israel for their poverty.

  8. Trust me they are already drilling the oil in Alaska and have been for many years, why do people think this isn't going on?  The oil is sent out of Alaska by huge oil ships.  An oil pipeline was going to be built through the Yukon and down through B.C.  but the Canadians would not allow it.  They also wanted to build a natural gas line but that was turned down too.  This oil would not stop the war, the Americans are going to do what they want, and really they don't care who it affects.  Look and how they don't care about what they do to the planet, they also don't learn, anyone remember Vietnam?

For those people who don't think that oil is being drilled in Alaska where have you been?  All you need to do is google oil and Alaska and you will see that oil has been drilled there since the 1970's.

  9. We couldn't pull out of Iraq just because of oil.  The Iraq situation is MUCH more complicated than that.

  10. We already drill for oil in Alaska, so I don't buy the argument that it would cost too much to process it. We already do.

The recent debate is whether or not to open up the wildlife refuges for drilling oil. By recent, I mean within the last 5 years or so.

  11. We have been drilling and pumping oil up here in Alaska since 1977. The wildlife are fine with the pipeline. We don't have enough oil to meet the needs and wants of the USA. Gas up here was $4.06/gal today.

  12. if USA drills in Alaska you might be at war with the rest of the world

  13. We don't have that much oil in AK. If we violated the wildlife preserve and drilled there, we might get enough to keep the country running for 6 months . Whoopee.

We aren't in Iraq for the oil. We are there because Sadaam Hussein once put a hit out on the elder President Bush. When the younger Pres. Bush was fed a line about WMDs, he jumped on the chance for revenge.

  14. It would be really naive to think the reason for the war is only OIL.  Of course, we want all the oil in the middle east, since we can't get enough of driving our big cars.  But we also have something to share with them: Target, Wal Mart, Arby's, McDonalds.  Ask the soldiers in the mid. east how many of these they've seen already.

  15. no, because it is not about oil.

  16. the war in Iraq is not just over oil.  everyday there are such horrors that civilians will never know of.  rivers of sewer, neighbors that are just rotted corpses, children holding guns instead of toys, children unable to go to school, women being rapped and murdered and this BEING ALLOWED  by their families and or spouses.  our men and women are over there fighting to give these people what we have with every breath, FREEDOM.

Yes its true Alaska has oil.  and its unclear how much only because is very protective of our land and resources.   But at this time its not cost efficient to be support the US's demands on oil.  And other than refinement issues, there is the wildlife and our enviroment.  where the oil rigs would go are right smack in the middle of breeding grounds for animals such as caribou, Arctic fox, Arctic tern...etc....    after the Exon Valdez oil spill, Alaska will no longer allow such horrors to happen again.

oh and p.s.   such videos are usually sponsered by big oil companies.  try lookin into the companies that backed the video.
