  1. The reason for this discrepancy is not that women are not given the same opportunities as men are in the same positions.  Lets say that a company hired two 25 year olds to work in the same position.  Most likely within ten years, the man will continue with his path up the ladder while a woman might have to decide to slow down if she wants to have children.

When management looks at this scenerio they will invest in the man more than in the woman by giving the man more opportunities for promotions, etc.  This is where the lower salaries come into question.

It would be impossible for a company to justify only hiring women because at the end of the day they would constantly have to rehire and retrain employees which is a costly and non-beneficial way to hire.

  2. You've hit one of the points that prove that the so called "wage gap" is just a myth. In order to get Equal Pay, women need to work as many years, as many hours per week, cost the company no more in s*x specific benefits, never take years off for staying at home (While they do that, the guys on the job continue to gain experience and advancement at work), and so on. Plus, women need to take on the more dangerous jobs that pay more $ (Over 90% of all workplace deaths are men; because women aren't doing those jobs).

The fact remains that Equal Pay for equal work was the law as of 1963, several years before NOW was formed. Trust lying feminists to show up late, and then demand benefits that their showing up late forfeited.

  3. If women can do the same job, they should make the same money.  It is good to promote women and minorities into corporations, government and big companies.  The only area women have trouble is the military and police force.

  4. PLEASE, take a class in statistics - you need to understand what an aggregate figure is.

While you are at it, take economics and philosophy.  A well rounded education is a tremendous asset.

ETA: While the answerer below is essentially correct, the statements posted (and perhaps the book referenced itself ?) fail to address the social reasons WHY women make different choices than men which lead to lower earnings.

It's all well and good to identify the mechanics here, but unless we look deeper into the ideals and paradigms driving those decisions,  wage disparity cannot be corrected.  It's time to examine this on a deeper level.

Edit @Answersgeek:  That's still only a first layer look at it.  You may have never gotten into a conversation with a woman who had children because "it was expected" by her family or social circle, meaning that remaining child free was not an option in her world.

And what about the assignment of lower wages to occupations that have always been predominantly female, because it was assumed they only needed "pin money"  and that a man was taking care of her financially.

There is more to the story.  Much more.

  5. If things "did" work that way, and I am not at all saying I would think it should, yes... companies would be smart to hire "cheap" labor... but, then again, that's not how things are because women are the equal of men and the only things that make us not equal are the individual things that make us unique.  However, people in big businesses are not thinking about the "human" level... they are thinking about PRODUCT and how they can get away with whatever they can get away with.  As far as I'm concerned, it happens in politics too, and not just corporate businesses.  I don't work in that world and I'm glad.

  6. pay disparity started about a century ago.

they gave women "pin money" believing women didn't need to make money b/c husbands took care of them.

pay disparity exists to this day, despite equal pay laws.

pay disparity looks at women and men working the same jobs and the data is by the labor department.  most federal sources of data are quite reliable.

companies hire males and females b/c of discrimination laws. they have salary ranges and often will offer an applicant a salary on the low end, say $42,000 for a job paying 40,000 to 50,000.  applicants need to negotiate for the higher salaries.

there are all kinds of factors that affect this....i'd suggest you read more about it from credible sources. it's a serious issue and it has ramifications for all women (don't you have any female friends or relatives?) and minorities.

    you can ask similar questions-

why did whites have blacks sit on the back of the bus?

why were there separate water fountains (didnt that cost more)?

why doesnt the catholic church allow women to be priests?

why are all bus drivers black?

why do they pay such exorbitant salaries to ceos, including outrageous bonuses.....

plenty of questions.....not always with logical explanations....nor with sound financial reasoning....

i dont understand why ppl discriminate myself...

  7. Because that wouldn't be equal opportunity employment.

There's a poster about that at work, and ticks everyone off. If this is happening, and it's illegal, and the poster is up at work, then they KNOW it's illegal, and it shouldn't be happening!

  8. Women tend to work lower-paying jobs, less hours, etc.  They are NOT paid less for the SAME work no matter what people say.  If they were, you'd be on the mark.  Who'd ever hire men?

  9. Because, my friend.  If every company was to do that, during one week out of each month, our entire market would either crash due to natural events or due to the number of medical leaves due to pregnancies.

We guys are basically paid an extra 25% because, while the girls are busy being sick, we are pretty well guaranteed to show up for work.  Don't get me wrong here, I'm not talking for all the women out there, but, when is the last time a guy had to leave due to menstral, maternety, menapose (or how ever you write it), or stress leave?  Most of the time, it's women who present themselves with the problem.  Another reason is the fact that were built to lift what ever we need to lift and wont turn around and ask another guy to do it for us, instead, we'll ask him to help us because it's to heavy for only one person to do it on there own.

Alot of women mean well, but, they need to rethink if they are really doing the right thing in coming to work.  As I said, I'm not talking for all the women here.

Let me rephrase this in explaining it this way, the working world is meant for adults, not children.  So that means, women are invited to join, not girls....  And as for the number of actual women who are presently in the work force, they unfortunately have to pay for the millions of worthless little girls by getting 25% less pay.  But, usually the women were smart enough to find themselves careers where the 25% does'nt apply anyway.  Leaving millions of bitchy little girls wondering why they get 25% less pay then men.

    ;)

  10. The guy above me (Marmeladov) has serious issues...

  11. It's illegal and sexist?

  12. This has nothing to do with gender discrimination. It has to do with the life choices women make.

    - Women usually take lower paying jobs because they allow more time with family. Women are less willing than men on an average to sacrifice family for career.

    - Most workers in dangerous jobs are male, and the sheer danger involved makes these jobs better paid than most.

    - Men are more willing to do overtime, and less likely to take time off.

    - Pregnancy loses women working years, and by the time they get back to work, the men they started work with would be far ahead and earning more.

    - Men are more aggressive in negotiating for salary and promotions.

    - Most top jobs that pay a lot require very little time with family, and men are more likely to give family time up to provide for the family.

Edit: Elf #3, The first point (family time) is a social reason women take jobs that pay less. Maybe you missed it. And the book does deal with that.

Men tend to be more economically successful but less emotionally satisfied (losing family time does that to you) and women tend to be less successful but more emotionally satisfied.

And you can't value economical success over emotional satisfaction, which is the mistake feminists commit time and time again. That's why mothers still refuse day care, even if it's quality, because active parenting from them helps them get the emotional satisfaction of crafting their kid themselves into adults. I know I'd do the same.

Oh, and day care doesn't exist in India, BTW.
