Isn't jook called rice porridge?

I would call it a porridge since it's essentially a boiled grain (rice).

A soup typically contains meat, vegetables and a stock.

i've always treated it as both soup and porridge. i've asked my parents before but they said it doesn't really matter. i'm chinese by the way.

I always thought it was porridge, but then I always hear that porridge and jook is different.

Jook or Congee should probably be considered a porridge. It is usually eaten as a meal or in place of rice in a meal. Traditionally it is served as breakfast. Eaten plain but served with a variety of pickled vegetables, preserved meats and fried bread. Cantonese Jook tends to have flavor added to it. Such as fish, seafood, chicken, beef, vegetables or even exotic items like snake, abalone, and frogs. Though flavored jook is found in all parts of chinese cooking, Cantonese jook seems to have the most varieties. Served usually in larger portions and accompanied by just panfried noodles and fried bread. These days you can find restaurants in China/HK/ Taiwan that serves a choice of either regular white rice or plain rice porridge with entrees that they serve.

Jook is also a common food for when you get a cold or sore throat. Its hot and easy to eat just like chicken soup!
