If you're a teacher (preferably in NC), please help me!?

I'm an elementary education major in Hawaii! I was born & raised in North Carolina but my husband is in the military so we are in Hawaii for the next 4 years. I'll be graduating here, but we will ultimately wind up in North Carolina! I know in middle school I had a different teacher for English/Social Studies than for Math/Science. But when it comes to teaching elementary school in North Carolina, would I choose if I get to teach English or Math, etc? I'm wonderful with everything but math. It's my weakest point. I'm not that far in my major yet, although I will be next year! I'm just worried that not doing so well in math will hold me back when it comes to teaching elementary school! I know it varies by state but I just want to know if I get a choice or if I will teach all subjects to the students. Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Ultimately it will be up to you.  If you are teaching K-3 you will have to teach all subjects, even math.  If you choose to be a 4th or 5th grade teacher, many schools "team teach" and different teachers will take on one or two subjects only.  In that case, when interviewing, I would let them know about your interest area.  If only math is availble, simply turn the job down.

You can also apply for certain positions that you are interested in on the NC public schools website.

I didn't think that I was good in math either until I started in the position... the wonderful thing is that you learn as you go and have colleagues to help you out!

    Good luck!
