If you're destined for something, is it possible to fail?

Some people say certain people were destined to do something. Is it possible to be destined for something, but be lazy at acheiving it, thus you fail and don't do it. Or does destiny mean no matter what you do, you will do this one thing? or you wouldn't be lazy in the first place b/c you were destined for it?

  1. ...failure is part of destiny...what happens after you fail, becomes your true destiny as an individual...good luck...

  2. Most definitely, I am a shinning example. Life is tough! keep at it!

  3. How do you know you're destined to do something?

The only way you can say that and be sure is AFTER you accomplish it, before that, "destiny" is just "I really want to do this."

  4. If you're destined to fail, then obviously.

  5. Destiny doesn`t enter into the picture.  Looking at the bigger picture, you can`t get it wrong and you can`t ever get it done.  So you might as well just enjoy all your moments

  6. i equate destiny to potential, and one almost always has to work towards ones potential.

if u think about the endings to the sentence " it is your destiny to..." it will always require hard work:

"...be a great sportsman" --- Tons of work

    "... be a business leader" --- h**l of a lot of work

    "... be a hotdog eating champion" --- practice (i assume ;) )

so yeah, wherever their is work involved, there is a chance of failure (not working hard enough, someone else working harder etc)

    nothing in ife is certain!!

  7. These are the types of questions that boggle the mind.  It is true that when we see certain people excel or succeed in what they do, then we say they were or must have been destined for that.  However, is this success really 'destiny' or the result of perseverance, perhaps mingled with some luck and opportunity.  To be destined for something means that some greater force has preordained the time, place, and manner of your existence.  This is something that is difficult to accept since we see so much inconsistency in the human situation.  There are so many factors that weigh upon us that we are practically never sure what to expect.  Hence the old axiom, we hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Failure is a common human experience, but failure does not mean a goal is not attained.  Thomas Edison exemplifies the notion of a successful failure.  He tried and tired and met failure again and again.  Only through this experience did he become successful.  I think majority of a person's 'destiny' lies in the choices they make.  Even a successful individual can be a lousy person.  They can be unfaithful, conniving, and so on.  Fortune can be lost as well.  If they lose out, were they destined for that?  In fact, can a no good, two-bit loser be said to have been destined for that failure of life?

I think the prospect of destiny is just a loose term to indicate the many causes and consequences that have resulted in achieving success.  Majority of these successful people work hard for their achievement and merit the rewards.  I am also sure they have met their share of rejection and opportune moments.

  8. due to free will, yes it is

  9. Failure is always a possibility so I guess that precludes destiny.  I choose free will (even if it does turn out to be an illusion).  Change is the only constant in life.
