Do you get given stuff (anything like rucksacks, rifle cleaning kit, waterproofs, beret, mitts)? Do people often buy extras for themselves?

  1. As previously stated the Army issues your "kit." They have begun in the past few years to issue better stuff. Before it was kinda crappie. I bought all my own. I put together a rack system from a few different places and I am still working on it. It is about being functional for your job or situation. The rucks we get now are ok, as are the cleaning kits. The Army provides most everything you need as well as a yearly clothing allowance.

  2. No, the Army gives u all that stuff, basically they issue it to you and you have to take care of it because u will return it eventually.

the army gives u a special yearly allowance so u can buy uniforms, boots and things like that as stuff they issue u gets old from wearing it.......

  3. The Army provides you your gear. However, sometimes you will look at the gear and see that you need something better. Then you purchase your own personal gear.

For example, the Army has provided me with uniforms, ballistic armor, and load carrying equipment. I don't like the vest or backpack the Army has for medics, so I have purchased my own gear because I feel it works better.

After my enlistment is up, or if I move to a new unit, I give back the Army's gear to my unit and keep the gear I purchase myself.
