Then what are you supposed to do while you're gone/sleeping? I had troubles with my dog chewing cords and wood before, and people reccomended buying him a bunch of chew toys.. but since he chews while I'm gone or asleep, I can't give him chew toys, because I can't supervise him, right? And even when I crate him, he chews up the crate pads.. What's a dog owner to do?

  1. You find warnings on every toy and chew toy to protect the manufacturing company from lawsuits if the toy or chew injures your dog.  In fact anything your dog plays with or chews on has the chance of injuring or even killing your dog.  So by telling you to supervise your dog, takes the responsibility off of them and on to you.  I do sympathize with you and you will have to make the final decision on what toys your dog is allowed to have unsupervised.  My dog is only allowed Kongs when unsupervised.  She too will tear up crate pads, so she no longer has one in her crate.  She is crate trained and stays in it while I'm at work.  I would rather her have the freedom of roaming the house, but to protect her and the house, she must stay crated.  At least until she is more mature and settles down.

  2. i dont supervise my dog with every chew toy... i only watch her with rawhide... most of my pups chewies are durable enough so she's not gonna break them while i'm out or asleep.. in fact, she sleeps with a toy turtle every night... i have never heard this before.. if i am wrong, please correct me...

  3. The only reason the toys say that, is if by chance something were to happen - the manufactures of the chew toy are not held responsible.

If your dog chews a lot, and can be quite distructive, try purchasing a black kong.  If he is just a regular chewer you can get the regular red kongs.  They are heavy duty kongs and take a lot to tear/break.  Add some peanut butter, or a mixture of healthy dog approrpriate food inside the kong and freeze it.  Then when you are gone give it to the dog.. if done properly can last over 2 hours.

  4. i have a 10 month old dacshund. i let him chew whatever chew toy he wants with or without mt supervision. now im not saying that your dog cant choke (just like humans in any circumstance) but the the companies put that on the labels for legality purposes. they just dont want you to come back and sue them because your dog choked on one of their chew toys. do you notice that they put that on all children's toys? there are toys out there that a child would have to actually unscrew with a screwdriver to get to the small pieces and then choke on them for the toy to do harm. just relax. to make you feel more at ease buy more natural things such as raw hides and the white bones that that are wrapped around at the ends (not sure what they are made of exactly) because they soften as the dog chews on it.
