Question:

If you're vegetarian, is it wrong to pick meat off of a pizza?

Sometimes when I'm eating with people and they order meat on their pizza, I have to pick it off in order to eat a slice. And I was wondering, should I just not eat the pizza because there's meat on it? Or is it okay as long as I'm picking off the meat? I guess there's not "rule", I just need other opinions on this.

  1. Your dining partners would probably like it if you moved the meat to their portions. Or better yet, when you order the pizza, tell the cook to put your portion of meat on another part of the pizza as a no-cost extra.

  2. I would say that it's okay for you to eat it.  Don't worry about "meat residue" left over on your slice after picking the meat off.  Even if you had ordered a completely vegetarian pizza, it would most likely still have some "meat residue" on it because when they're cutting it up into slices, they use the same pizza cutter on a pepperoni-sausage pizza that they use on a veggie pizza.

So unless you're going to an all-veggie pizza place, there's no practical way to avoid all "meat residue" anyway.

  3. A vegetarian wouldn't eat it.  The fat and juices from the meat is still on the pizza even if you picked it off.

  4. Well, it is not great to have meat on your pizza slice, so either request the pizza to have a certain number of slices (the amount you can eat) without the meat. Otherwise, ask the pizza people to put the meat on the side. I would think it is wrong to pick off the meat in order to have a slice as meat should not be on a vegetarian's pizza slices in the first place.

  5. You're still (1) eating the left behind fats and juices from the meat, which I personally find disgusting, and (2) creating a market demand for meat.  Buying a meaty pizza and discarding the meat doesn't send the message to the market that fewer animals should be bred and slaughtered.  Of course, one pizza does not have a direct effect.  But, it's just as easy to order a cheese or veggie pizza and I've never encountered a pizza place that wouldn't do a half-and-half pizza.  If it was me and a meat pizza was the only option, I'd just not eat pizza.

  6. As lon as it is YOUR slice not theres LOL

  7. I don't do it. I'll only "eat around" as a last resort. Like, there's nothing else to eat.

But different vegetarians have different standards. Some don't mind a bit. It's up to you.

  8. that would not be vegetarian because the grease from the meat seeped into the pizza.

if you did that you really wouldn't be vegetarian b/c you are still eating the "juices" from the meat.

tell them to get half cheese b/c you are a vegetarian.

  9. Just ask to get half meat and half cheese.

  10. ok well if youre only doing it for health reasons..youre safe

but if youre trying to stop cruelty to animals like a lot of us vegans are..

youre still contributing to the MEAT on the pizza by buying it

of course if your friends bought it...

it wouldnt matter since its already bought

    so it really depends :]

    hope i made sense :]

  11. Not a hard thing to solve by yourself buddy.  But I will help you out.

Since you are taking off the meat, it means it's meat free correct?

If I'm right, vegetarians eat things without meat.

Since the slice no longer has meat, you can eat it!

    Pizza - Meat = Vegetarian

Edit:  Well I see my opinions didn't go down too well here in this part of Yahoo.  Honestly if you are eating pizza there is a 95% chance that some part of it has an animal byproduct.  I mean, even the soil wheat is planted in uses animal fertilizer and cheese comes from animals.  same with tomatoes grown with fertilizer.  So yeah, you cant escape eating animal products ever really unless you wish to die by mal nutrition.

  12. I wouldn't eat it at all. The fat from the meat is going to be on the pizza, it's still going to taste like meat.

  13. why don't you tell people you don't eat meat and get a different topping??  they can still get meat on half the pie and you can get plain or a non meat topping on half.  it's not right that one person picks and the other is forced into that situation.

i would not eat it and pick the meat off.  one. it's going to have a meat taste/smell then which i think would be gross. and two.  then it's just wasting the meat which has already been purchased.  just ask for no meat, there's nothing at all wrong wtih that.

  14. It's up to you. Some of us are sufficiently grossed out by meat we wouldn't eat the pizza.

  15. I assume that you don't eat meat or byproducts. If you eat pizza, or bread, you are eating the oils and juices of the meat that carries the same DNA as the bulk meat itself. You are not a true vegan. Besides, there are many things in flesh that you need to be truly healthy. Some will dispute that, but it is my truth.Picking the meat off leaves the presence of the meat in the residue.Being vegan won't stop us from enjoying the hamburgers, steaks, fish fillets, hocks, snout, testes, and all the things we like.I wish we could survive without killing, but we are carniverous animals and always will be by nature.Good luck in your choices, I do respect that.

  16. There are no hard and fast rules about being a vegetarian. You have to decide for yourself what works for your beliefs and your life. Some vegetarians won't eat anything that touches meat, others will just eat around the meat. Personally, I won't eat, for example, chicken or beef broth or a pizza that has meat on it. If no one wants to share a veggie pizza with me, then I would order a separate dish. I don't like to impose my diet habits on anyone else. But if you don't mind taking meat off and eating it, then go for it!

  17. just tell them that u r a vegetarian and if they could order a vegetarian pizza, if they r ur real friends, they should understand

  18. Picking the meat off doesn't remove the meat juice left behind, so you shouldn't be eating this. Order your own veggie pizza next time.

  19. lol, Katelyn...as your best friend...when I order pizza; I don't care if you pick the meat off...it doesn't matter.

    :)

  20. When I started vegetarianism I did that but later stopped because I still felt disgusted.

  21. again. do what you are comfortable with!!!!!!

i used to pick meat off peperoni pizza until i was about 14 (i'm fussier now and i dont cos i dont feel COMFORTABLE!)

:) its about your comfort levels!

i order vegetarian pizza but most of the time it still has meat on it anyway so i dont eat pizza much nowadays! or i make my own.

if your fine with picking the meat off just keep doing that but if you would rather not ask to order a vego pizza

    goodluck
