If you've had a kidney stone, are your chances good of having them again in the future?

I had them when I was 21 from calcium buildup resulting from not drinking enough water. I'm 28 now, & I drink a lot more water but probably still not enough. Do you know what my risks are, because I definitely wouldn't want to go through that nightmare again! Thanks :)

  1. Some people are predisposed to having kidney stones (renal calculi). More often than not, this can be prevented with dietary changes. The causes of the stones and the treatment depends on what they are made of. This is determined by clinical laboratory analysis of the stone. With this information, you and your Dr. can make some changes to diet, or perhaps medication.

Yes, for some, it is as simple as increasing fluid intake, but for others, it may involve major dietary changes or medication.

I don't blame you for wanting to avoid having stones again....they are VERY painful. More importantly, they can cause major kidney damage.

There is much info available on line about kidney stones and it can be helpful. Before making any major changes, discuss them with your physician during your next check up.

    Good Luck!
