If you've lossed money from a business in the 1st quarter can you ask the goverment to?

give you a refund for the tax you paid? Like say I made money in the 2nd quarter and cause I lost 1 quarter I don't have to pay taxes 2nd quarter.

  1. No, you cannot do that.


  2. Assuming you are talking about income taxes, then there is no issue here as your tax return is filed for an entire year, not for individual quarters.

    You may be referring to GST, as it is common to file GST returns quarterly.  If this is the case, then if your GST paid on expenses (input tax credits) exceeds the GST collectible on sales for a particular quarter then you would have a refund for that quarter.  Each quarter is filed independently.  

    Or finally, you may be referring to quarterly income tax instalments.  If you are required to pay instalments then this requirement will not be removed just because you lost money in a particular quarter, because instalment requirements are based on previous year's income results.  But if you expect that the current year's taxable income is going to be less than the previous year's then you can choose to reduce your instalment payments, but be cautioned that if your taxable income ends up being the same or higher than the previous year then you will be assessed interest for not making the required instalments.
