  5. Different rules in different jurisdictions - for instance, a mayor of Washington, DC, was reelected after being convicted of drug offenses at a felony level. But this is not true of all positions, and it seems as though employment is more restrictive in that manner than elective positions. Check your local laws for applicability.

There is no law that absolutely prevents a felon (who is not on parole) from working for the government.  However, any criminal conviction will be reviewed and depending on the facts and circumstances and availability of other qualified candidates it can easily prevent one from being hired for the position.  The Federal Government has a reputation of being tougher on it than many state and local governments.  Of course lying about a criminal conviction (or any other material matter) will almost always disqualify the candidate.
