  1. The idea that toilets flush in other directions depending on which hemisphere you are on is a hoax. So yes, your toilet flushes.

  2. Toilets flush in the direction the jets inside the rim are pointed - north or south hemisphere has not impact on the way the water spins.

  3. If you flush a toilet located exactly on the equator, the effect of gravity is to empty it in the same manner as anywhere else. The direction that the water spins depends on the way the toilet was designed and built.

The same is true if the toilet were at a more northerly or southerly latitude except that the effect of the earth's rotation begins to play a small part in this subject. When there is a motion of water on a spinning earth, the Coriolis effect can produce rotation too. These effects depend directly on the angle of latitude, and they are greatest at the poles.

So if there is a hemispherical bowl containing still water and a sink-hole located at the vertical axis of symmetry of the water, these forces will cause the water to spin as it runs away provided it is not exactly at the equator. It is fairly easy to demonstrate this, even if the bowel is not as perfect as described above. But toilets? there are too many unknowns.

  4. I think the water and contents just spray upwards actually. Be careful!

  5. Good question.  Straight down, maybe?  I have no idea.
