Basically if you pass the officer while he is not in a police car, but is in uniform, he writes down your plates and follows you for a short time before breaking off, can he get you in any direct trouble? Mail you a ticket? or can he only tell his buddies to keep an eye on you in hopes of catching you?

  1. Yes, he can.  A police officer can ticket you at any time.  He/she does not stop being a police officer when off duty.

  2. any cop who does anything off duty is putting themselves at risk.  if you passed me in this situation.. who cares, im off work and would have my blinders on.  if you got a ticket in the mail... let them try to prove who was driving.. they can.  if they know you that is different but at the same time.. they didnt stop you and have you sign the ticket.  i cant see that you have anything to worry about.  i dont get in to liability issues for things as lame as people speeding.  however... if you drove by and pointed a gun at someone...thats a different story.  gotta take care of business at that point.

  3. Yes, you can receive a ticket.  Police officers, whether they are working or not, are considered to be on duty 24/7.  The officer can mail you a ticket without ever having to pull you over.

  4. No they can't. That did happen the an ex-NFL guy. The off duty cop followed him because he thought he was drunk then shot him 3 times. The cop got sued.
