Just wondering if you think it can be overcome or do you just just give in to the "diagnosis"?

  1. specialized reading instruction using teh Wilson Reading System (Orton Gillingham based)

  2. I have been working with Dyslexic children for 15 years now.

The brain is very elastic so it can always be taught. What you must be careful of is that the child doesn't get burned out and stressed. Some programs that you can have at home that can help besides the good ones mentioned is "Wordshark" ( just google it). This is a computer spelling and word recognition program originally designed for Dyslexics. The math version Numbershark is excellent as well.

Another program that worked for one of my students where nothing else did is "Letterland". It gives a more visual approach to the encoding.

Another great program is the online "Reading Upgrade", but make sure you have heaps of revision and do not move the child too fast.

Hope this will help! A website where he can feel better about himself is www.sparktop.com. Good Luck.

  3. A multidisciplinary approach to reading, like the Orton-Gillingham method. This requires someone with training. I've used it with students since 1993 with great success.

My son received such instruction from third grade to seventh, three times a weeks for an hour. He is a successful college student. I did not teach him myself. We used another trained tutor.

It gives you a way to approach reading. Everyone just needs a strategy to have some measure of success. It does take time and lots of repetitive practice.

I've also seen students improve greatly using the Read 180 program.

  4. Dyslexia cannot be "overcome" you will have it for the rest of your life.  However, there are strategies and teaching methods that can help you learn to read.  Don't worry,  we all have to use certain tricks when we read, like rereading a sentence for understanding, for example.  The direct instruction teaching method is researched based and highly recommended for successful outcomes.  I recommend the book below, it's like THE bible for direct instruction!!

  5. Here's a good website that explains how music lessons can help with dyslexia.  Hearing and vision are connected in dyslexia.
