  1. Its a term for a well rounded education.

  2. A liberal arts student spends about as much (sometimes more) time studying what many call "general education" as they do studying their major subject.  Since the major is also one of the liberal arts, it can be said that 100% of the study is in the liberal arts.

A professional or applied science student spends about 1/4 of their degree study in general education and 3/4 in their major.

The liberal arts are the fine and performing arts, social sciences, humanities, languages/literature, and natural sciences/mathematics.

Contrast this with the professions such as education, business, engineering, etc...

Most liberal arts students have a major in a specific subject but it is possible to earn a bachelor's degree in "liberal arts" where the major is all of the liberal arts.
