  1. I break down my children's work into daily assignments, but even if your mom is not doing that, you can still learn.

Pick up the book, and see how many pages you have, then divide that by the number of days you have to homeschool.  Try to finish about that number (or more) pages each day.

  2. There are many different ways to homeschool, so perhaps the method your mom is using isn't working with your learning style.  Here is some information on learning styles and different ways to homeschool:

If your mom does not want to change methods, then I would suggest you do a few pages or a complete lesson out of each book every day. Set up a little schedule for yourself on what subjects you will do in which order every day.

If you complete a bit of work in each subject every day, you should be just fine.

    Good luck!

  3. I see the problem: she expects you to work in the book, but isn't clear enough on the expectations. It stops you from deciding because you don't know how much you should do.

That kind of freedom is quite common with homeschooling families. I'd suggest reading The Teenage Liberation Handbook then ask her if you can develop your own program--without the books she picks. YOU pick the books that will help you with what you want to learn.

Until then, you could ask her how much she expects you to do, if you are supposed to finish the book in the school year, etc., so that you have an idea of how much to do each day. You can base it on number of pages or you can base it on the time--maybe you'll decide to spend an hour a day and get done as much as you can instead of just finishing 2 pages or whatever.

If you don't want that kind of freedom, you could always see if online public/charter school is available where you live and have those teachers assign you things. Still read The Teenage Liberation Handbook though. :)

  4. You need to talk to your mom about getting curriculum that meets your learning style - auditory, visual, kinethetic, global, etc.  Just tell her that workbooks don't work for you, and that you need some sort of plan.  She could just write, or type, a plan for the day/week/month/semester with instructions for each lesson.

You didn't mention what grade level you're in, so I can't speak to the level of self-teaching you should be doing (it's higher as the grade levels progress).

I hope you have more than *one* workbook.  You need at least the "core" courses of Language Arts, Math, Science, & History.

  5. You might try doing some research on learning styles. Some kids learn best by reading a text book and filling in workbook pages, but the majority do not. Take a look at this web site and see if you can figure out your learning style: http://www.ldpride.net/learningstyles.MI... If you can present that information to your mom, she might be open to trying a different method. However! You still need to build up the areas in which you are not strong, so a compromise may be in order. You may need to use a combination of learning methods, hands-on, lectures or auditory lessons, and visual lessons, to help you learn to learn using any method.
