  1. Depends on what you will need for a safe retirement.  do you want 50K/year or 100K/yr in today's dollars ?  

    But for your question I'll make the following assumptions

    30 Year Time Frame

    You want 1,000,000 at retirement to generate about 50K+ in income

    You will save 6K every year for the next 30 years.

    You will earn about 5% every year.

    Your current saving should be around $130,000 to meet the above goal.

    Also if you have a large mortgage then by building equity (paying down the mortgage), you are in fact also saving yet this amount will not show up in your savings account.
