If you are just starting a cat with wet food is it normal for them to throw up?

I'm just starting my cats (seven and two) on wet food (I must, it's an order from my vet). My seven year old just puked. Is this normal? When should I consult the vet?

Please do not say that I shouldn't feed wet food. It's the vet's orders.

Thank you!!!

  1. i definitely think you should consult a vet asap.  it could just be a virus but you can never be to safe.  i hope your cat stays happy and health for the rest of its life!  :)

  2. what I would do is either try another brand and/or flavor.  but Ideally mix a small amount of wet into the dry adding more each time while cutting back on the dry.   i'd say take up to a week or so's time.   I'm surprised that the vet would have you just switch.  That can be upsetting to the stomach. Then again  Kitty may have just eaten too much at once and you may want to give a smaller amount then if he seems to still be looking for more you can give him a bit more.  some cats do have allergies to certain foods.  I had a cat that couldn't eat white fish, she puked every time.

  3. It may be because you just started new food. If the vomit looks just like the wet food, then that is normal for a cat to throw up every once in a while. You could contact your vet via phone to inquire about the vomit. I wouldn't take the cat in to see the vet unless the cat is acting strange. Keep on the vet's orders unless you call him and he tells you differently.

  4. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOO

  5. Yes, it is normal for them to throw up any time you make a drastic change to their diet.  It will take them time for them to develop the right enzymes to digest the new food.  Until then, you should expect them to be a little sick.  This is just a transition period.  You shouldn't worry too much about it unless they start to lose weight or refuse to eat because of how it makes them feel.  In that event, just consult with your vet again, and he or she will help you find another solution.

  6. Change the brand of food and try again. My cats started throwing up when I just went to a different brand.

  7. It's either allergic to the food, or it just ate to much. That's what I think. And if it happens again with the same animal, tell the vet.

  8. They say to slowly mix the old brand with the new stuff because cats have sensitive stomachs.  Put a little of the old dry food in the new wet food and see if it helps. If it keeps happening than yes call the vet.
