  1. Nope. Something called inertia comes into play. Slept during H.S. Physics did we ? Don't try this to prove it though.

  3. The train is travelling at 100mph maybe. You will be able to jump in the opposite direction at what... 2mph if you are a huge thighed jumping beast!

    That still leaves 98mph of travel in the same direction as a train.

    So er... good luck with that!!

  7. Yes. As soon as you lose direct contact with the train your body will slow down. At some point its forward motion will stop and, instantly, you are stopped (relative to the ground outside).

  8. This is a perspective problem. From your perspective, you will not seem to move. From someone outside the train's perspective, you will still be travelling forward, albeit in a slower velocity during the moment you jump backwards.

    This is assuming a regular train moving at a relatively fast velocity as opposed to a train moving at, say, 20ft per minute.

    And technically, while you are moving both forwards and backwards on the train, you are also rotating with the Earth as it spins around (800 mph) and then you are travelling even faster in a path around the sun (30,000mph) as the whole solar system goes in it's path around the center of our galaxy and the galaxy is movings in its own path. Try countering out all of those movements. :)

  10. You slow down, yes. Subtract the speed you jump at from the speed of the train.

    So if one's enough to cancel the other out you stop moving - until you land on the floor of course, then you'll accelerate to the speed of the train again.
