  1. if u r from the UK go to yr nearest post office and get an E111 form and get the cashier to stamp it. that will entitle u to free medical treatment abroad

    :)

  2. It depends if you have a travel insurance that is valid in Europe or not. So if you are going to travel somewhere, always take a travel insurance especially for sickness. It helped me last spring when I was in Malta and got sick, had to be in a hospital for a few days. I did not have to pay anything thanks to the insurance.

So always take an insurance in case of sickness!

  3. I believe your OWN insurance handles it.  And you pay your deductible

  4. If you are from an EU country (and some European but non-EU) then you can obtain a basic insurance free of charge in the form of a EHIC card - you can read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EHIC

This will entitle you to basic cover but nothing more e.g. repatriation to your home country in case of injury

Many countries have an insurance based system for citizens and visitors alike.  Therefore check your coverage.

Eitherway it is of course important to have medical insurance, and as a visitor you will more than likely be expected to pay in advance (and claim back on your insurance), at least this was my experience some years back for a simple visit to the equivalent of the emergency dept.

EDIT - @ Joe - the E111 does not exist anymore - it is replaced by the EHIC as I mentioned above, and as also mentioned this is not a replacement for travel insurance.  It covers just basic emergency cover only - no non-emergency treatments, and certainly no repatriation back to the UK if there is trouble.  Not a smart idea to travel with just a EHIC alone!
