If you bet an exacta in para-mutuel wagering, and one of the picks hits, do you collect for that pick hitting?

Example- you play 5 and 8 on an exacta bet and #8 places, can you collect for #8 showing?

  1. You get nothing. That is why it is an exacta.... The payouts are more due to the fact that you MUST have the horses in the exact order.

No.  An exacta bet is placed on the entries finishing in the first and second positions.  In your example, you could only collect on #8 showing if you had a Show bet placed on the #8.  Those are two separate bets.  If you only had the exacta bet, then you would not collect on #8 - win, place, or show.

  3. in an exacta you must pick both the winner and the place (2nd place) horse.  So, if you bet a 5/8 exacta, the 5 must win and the 8 must run 2nd for you to collect the bet.  now, if you bet an exacta BOX you win if either horse wins with the other running 2nd.  The word Show means 3rd place.
