If you break a pencil in two, why won't it go back into a pencil if you put the two together?

A pencil is made up of atoms right? ok when you break a pencil in two, the atoms will separate along where you break it right? so why is it when you put the two pieces of a broken pencil together, they won't become one pencil again? why won't the atoms stick together like they were before you broke the pencil?
