If you call in sick can your employer force you to work on your day off because you called in during the week?

i know this person who was sick this week and he called in two days- He is never required to work weekends. When he went to work thursday he was told he had to work saturday because he was sick for two days? Can a company really do this?

  1. I don't think so... maybe you should check into that. I honestly want to say no they can't but nothing surprises me anymore, people seem to be able to pull whatever c**p they want if they go through the right person. I guess it depends on the place of employment.


  2. Sure they can.  Unless you have a contract or a union that says no.

    You do have a choice... Quit.

  3. If you are salaried they can have you work as many hours as they need you. If you are hourly you have a minimum  number of hours you have to work in order to get paid 40. My co workers have called off sick, then were off the next day as their regular day off. It happens.

    Some companies let you take a vacation day to make up lost time if you are out of sick days. Your friend may have to work saturday to make up one of the 2 days they were sick since they are normally off only 2 days a week.  

  4. No, you can quit if you want.

    Do you know what? Businesses need to make money to make payroll.  When someone calls in sick, someone else has to cover.  If there is no one to cover, the work still needs to be done.

    Tell your friend to grow up.  He's not working for Mommy and Daddy.
