I am afraid to delete stuff because I don't know what is needed and what is not, and my Norton anti-virus system is way out -dated. I cannot afford to buy a new one. HELP! I have a Compaq FS7600 computer and Windows XP.

  1. I highly recommendd the avast anti-virus program as it also fights malware.  FreeZone-alarm firewall is good for keeping the nastiest trouble causing software out to begin with.  Also checkout http://www.safer-networking.org for spybot search and destroy for a good spyware detection/removal tool.  I also think a good drive file erase shredder is a good idea.

  2. AVG is great, thats what i have used for a while and it works for me. i also run XP

  3. Here are some really good programs that are free. I use them & have had no problems at all. You will have to uninstall Norton first before you install a new anti-virus. Use the Norton uninstall tool.

  4. I recommend AVG to everyone I know who asks this question.

You cannot, repeat cannot afford to run a computer without good security these days - it will cost you a lot more in the long run. When I was running a certain firewall software a few years back it would warn how many attacks were coming in - one every few minutes on average. Many of those would be viruses.

So make sure you keep up to date with patches, turn on XP's firewall and download avg asap.

  5. AVG is pretty good.  It's free at http://free.avg.com

Avast is also good and also free at http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-...
