If you claim a horse and it is euthanized during the race do you loose your money?

the reason i ask is during the first race at churchill on the 21st a horse name vinstar was in a 50k claimer he broke down during the race and was euthanized. he was also claimed so im curious to know if the new owners still have to pay the 50k tag.

  1. Once the horse is a starter in the race, he becomes property of the new owners after the race.  Even if all there is left is a dead carcass.

  3. A person who claims it,, owns it the minute the gate opens PERIOD !!!!!!!

    and he has to pay for him period .....

    Now if the horse won,, the money goes NOT TO THE person who claimed him..

    it goes to the previous owners !!

  4. Things have changed in many states.  Once the horse breaks from the gate it becomes the property (and risk) of the claimer.  The money is paid at the time they put the claim in so they can't refuse to pay.

    It's a common way unscrupulous people can get rid of their problem horse - drop him in a claimer, hope someone files a claim, let him out of the gate, then pull him up.  As long as he's sound enough or doped enough to break from the gate, he's gone.
