If you're not in the intersection by the time of the yellow light what do motorcyclists do? How do they shift down fast? Is there a way you can go to neutral from any gear? I'm wondering? lol

  1. Release the throttle, squeeze the clutch. This disengages the tranny from the engine, and brake appropiately.

A rider familiar with his machine can step down fully, not hat hard, a few times to get the bike into neutral or first. The neutral detent on my bike is sometimes difficult to find.

If I'm not already in neutral, I will put in there if it's a long light. If it's not a long light, I leave it in first, w/ the clutch lever squeezed. Some guys leave it in gear in case a car approaching from behind doesn't see you and he can hopefully pull over out of they way if it's deemed safe to do so.

tip:  When riding through a green intersection, keep your brake lever/pedal covered. You never know if people see you.

Always know what gear your in, it may help to know when slowing to turn onto streets or if you choose to downshift to power up for a freeway ramp.
