Question:

If you don't clear airport security, do you get a refund for your plane ticket?

I know that 99% of people *do* clear security, but it seems as though the TSA is being given more and more discression to deny people access to the boarding area (more stringent ID requirements, behavior detection officers, no-fly lists, etc). If you are denied access to the airport by TSA for whatever reason, must your airline refund your airfare?

  1. Good question! I would love to know the official answer!

I know the airline will carry you back home but i dont know if you will get a refund!

    EDIT:

    THE OFFICIAL ANSWER IS THIS:

It is YOUR job to deal with TSA & IMMIGRATION not thiers. Airlines job is to provide you with the air travel. There are typically two legs of a return ticket and therefore two possible scenarios:

    1. In the case of improper documentation before the start of the first leg of the flight (such as when you first arrive at the airport to go through immigrations), it would be treated basically as if you 'missed the flight'. Your options at this point are dependent on the terms of your ticket puchase in the case of a 'missing your flight'. You might be able to rebook at additional cost, or for many 'budget' airlines, your ticket may be totally DEAD and useless...you get nothing back and can just forget about your ticket.

    2. If you arrive at a USA border on an inbound flight, the airline has already given you service on the trip there. When you are forced to return to your original airport, you are typically put on the next flight back home, and the airline has basically provided you service in accordance with the return ticket (TO THE DESTINATIOn & RETURN). They don't charge you extra to change the date of your return ticket to 'ASAP', when the cause is due to Immigraton or TSA officials.

These are the basic principles, but details will vary with eac circumstance. At the end of the day, sometimes there are HUMAN BEINGS at the check-in counter, who will give you a break within the rules of the airline, but don't count on such luck.

  2. I don't know, but I don't imagine you would, unless you had travel insurance.  But I very much doubt that the airline would refund you.

  3. I would say that a typical airline will not refund your money since it is not their fault you didnt make it pass the TSA's. They would most likely rebook you on a later flight if they can or charge you a fee to change your ticket. TSA's are scrutinized more than you think, and they do not have the discretion you assume they have, in order for them to deny you entry into the airport they must have a good reason, and there usully is. (or at least the federal government thinks it's a good enough reason!)

  4. idk maybe if they have insurance on the ticket
