I was wondering if you are able to tutor math, english, piano, drawing, etc. even if you don't have a license.

  1. I don't see why not.  Just because you don't have your license doesn't mean that you are not "smart" in those subjects.  Unless of course your client wants you to have a license.  But, you can me a math wiz or excellent at playing the piano without having a teaching license.

  2. Sure why not...

  3. Well this all depends on what kind of tutoring you wish to do.  I know that as a 9th Grader in Highscool I tutored a 6th grader in math for money.  Then I have tutored various kids for money at various times as I continue to work for my teaching degree.  Though these admittedly are not the most steady of jobs.

If you are seeking employment with a tutoring company like the Sylvan Learning Center you would have to ask them.  For each institution is different about what they require of their employees.  I would imagine some places would require a license but I think most would not.  Seeing as there are a number of states that only require you to have had 2 years of college under your belt to be able to be a substitute teacher.  (Generally doesn't matter what your degree is going to be in.)

So long story short.. you more than likely do not need a teaching license to be able to tutor for money.

  4. If you are going to do it privately (like out of your home or theirs) then no you do not need a license.  But if you want to tutor through a company you probably need a license to prove you are competent in those areas.  I tutor at Sylvan Learning Center and we only hire tutors who have a teaching license.
