If you don't have your TV hooked up to a stereo, should you control the volume with the TV volume or the cable

volume? Someone told me to put the TV volume up to the max, then control it with the cable volume.

I use the tv. then if im recording a show onto dvd its a constant volume not going up and down

If by control with the cable you mean "cable box", then you would go into the menu of the cable box and set it to "fixed output" this will set it to a consistent volume and you can then use your tv's volume. You can do as your friend suggested but try at 3/4 volume and not full.
