Yes they can..................the way the law reads it this way.........

Place the child in the passengers side seat and secure the child, push the seat as far back as possible, if the vehicle is equipped with an airbag then turn it off and if out dont worry about it...

Yes it is ok. If truck is equipped with a passenger side air-bag make sure it is turned off.
