It depends whether passing summer school was required for you to pass your grade.  Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't, so you'll have to ask your school whether you were promoted to the next grade (you may not want to bring it to their attention that you didn't go to summer school).

If you failed a class during the school year and didn't go to summer school to get a better grade, then you still failed the class. Makes sense doesn't it?
